WBL Memories

1st WBL All-Star Game

March 14, 1979, Madison Square Garden

A flashy red ticket to a flashy event

The league prepared a media guide for the event . . .

Some of the All-Stars posed with Charlie McCabe of Manufacturer's Hanover.  (Click on thumbnail below to see full-sized photo.  It's a pretty big picture.)  From left to right, I think the players are:  Althea Gwyn, Gail Tatterson, Kaye Young, Gerry Booker, Charlie McCabe, Wanda Szeremeta, Joanie Smith, Brenda Chapman, Janice Thomas.

One of the All-Star referees was John Katzler, who also officiated the inaugural WBL game.

McCabe and WBL founder Bill Byrne presented the All-Star Game MVP trophy to the West's point guard, Rita Easterling of the Chicago Hustle -- shiner and all.  (Easterling was sporting 17 stitches over her right eye from colliding with a TV cameraman during a recent exhibition game against some football players.)

The trophy says:
